Who exactly IS Shadow?
AKA, the Basic Information. spoiler free.
Shadow the Hedgehog is a reoccurring character from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. originating in Sonic Adventure 2 and being created as the 'Ultimate Lifeform' by Gerald Robotnik, he was created to act as both a weapon, and a cure for Maria Robotnik (more on her later). Nowadays in the current, Shadow's new role is to protect the planet and it's inhabitants. He takes his role very seriously, and rarely (if, ever) humors anything else. He's a very stern person usually, and acts within his own interests. Allies quickly turn into obstacles depending on whether they oppose his plans or not. He is also majorly known as Sonic's main archrival. (OOC: I'd love to talk about that more but. maybe another day lol)
Shadow is brutally honest, which sometimes comes off as plain rude and thoughtless to others. His honesty usually comes from observations, and aren't necessarily supposed to offend intentionally. However, he sometimes is characterized with a large ego for himself, usually in more recent published titles. Despite how differently they may come off as, Shadow does share some of Sonic's personality quirks. one being, his hubris and ego at points. As stated before, Shadow rarely takes time for others and usually disregards them for other things he deems more important. He could be described as usually cold and bitter, and you never should expect much out of him in any situation.
Summed up, Shadow is best described as 'morally grey'. Indifferent to others and their alignments. Despite that, he shares a common enemy with most of the others, Eggman. So, he does fight for what's right... on the off-chance he doesn't. (more on that later).
Compared to an average hedgehog, Shadow's biology has been improved upon. It's important to note that Shadow is a Black Arms hybrid, infused with the alien species DNA. the perks granted are his speed (remarkable enough to be on par with Sonic's), his strength, and most importantly, his main move Chaos Control, alongside Chaos Spear. And also makes up for the biological red markings seen across his quills, eyes, and limbs. Although, his power also fell slightly short, however; as Shadow's powers were deemed unstable by the Professor, a handicap as much as it was an advantage. to combat this, an aid was created, to stable Shadow's power. It is both the limiter rings seen on his wrists and ankles, and the air shoes he wears. (did you know both have a purpose? the more you know. if you're not a sonic fan already that is lol)

Warning. This gets lowkey complicated so Er. Follow along to the best of your ability alright? I tried to go in chronological order of events, however everything is also so scattered. So that makes the explanation also scattered slightly. Also note: with much inspo and references taken off from the Sonic wiki ♡ although, not plagiarized ok? Just refrenced. Shadow's story starts over 50 years ago, and even a time when he wasn't created yet. Professor Gerald Robotnik was the grandfather of both Maria Robotnik and Ivo Robotnik (Also now known as Dr. Eggman) respectfully. He was a world-renowned scientist in his field, and regarded as one of the greatest, inventing and engineering groundbreaking creations at the time. Including his greatest and the grandeur of them all, Shadow the hedgehog. But, lighting in a bottle is not so easy to make recreationally. So naturally, there were some failures before there was the successor to those very failures (Which, we'll get into in a second). He inhabited The Space Colony ARK, which will be abbreviated to The ARK. a hovercraft in space that virtually acts as a laboratory, where not only Gerald, but other scientists work alongside eachother on these aforementioned creations. The ARK (as far as I'm aware) was funded by the Guardian Units of Nations (who will be abbreviated as G.U.N. furthermore). Although, not without limitations and handicaps; as Gerald was soon pressured by G.U.N. to make the ARK a weapon for destruction, since, birthing the Eclipse Cannon. The aforementioned cannon is a mass destructive, deadly beam strong enough to pierce through and engulf any celestial body in the desired direction; if all seven chaos emeralds are in it's possession, that is.
Another person very, very important to Shadow is Maria Robotnik. I'd bet that even non-fans might recognize her name if anything else. She was a young (I presume) teenaged girl, and the granddaughter to Gerald. One of the main catalysts at play here was her terminal illness, a severe neuron deficiency in her body. Which, could be severe enough to paralyze her for days, if not weeks at a time. Despite her weak body, the same could not be said about her spirit. In all other ways, Maria was strong. She was kind, and a true optimist, seeing the positives in everything, including her illness. She was generous, always putting others before herself, even when not needed. A purely good soul in a world that ultimately, didn't deserve it. Soon, Gerald took her under his care at the Space Colony ARK, to both act as a remission and, to find a cure for her terminal illness in the form of a recent contract between Gerald and G.U.N. now dubbed, 'Project Shadow'.
Project Shadow was a top secret deal from G.U.N. to create the Ultimate Lifeform; A weapon only at first, and second, a cure for illness, in the form of Immortality. As stated earlier, Gerald took up the offer, wanting more than anything to find Maria a cure to her illness. Already, the project got off to a rocky start, as the two had different plans of what they wanted. Of course, G.U.N. wanted a weapon, another metaphorical trophy to mount next to the walls of their tools capable of mass destruction. And Gerald wanted nothing more than something to cure his sick granddaughter. Even if only proof that it was capable was enough to sought after. Two conflicting ideas, bound to clash together at some point. Gerald's first idea was to harness a power called 'Chaos Emerald energy', which came from. You'll never guess. Chaos Emeralds. Which, curiosity was materialized into a creature known as the Biolizard, modeled after a salamander. The biolizard is metacontexually and in universe generally also known for and is referred to as Shadow's prototype. Unfortunately, The biolizard turned out to be uncontrollable, and too dangerous and unpredictable. The creature is very much cited to 'be in pain', which, just shows how even now, Shadow still needs aid in controling the powers as well. (Food for thought!) And even if some knowledge was learned through the Biolizard, such as self-regeneration and restoration, it ultimately had to be scrapped in favor of something with a mind of its own, less mechanical help--and slightly less unpredictable.
Now, around this time over 50 years ago, it seemed like Gerald picked a good time to do a rehaul on Project Shadow. As, around this time, the elusive Black Comet passed by the earth. The Black Comet arrives every 50 years, and is filled with Black Arms. An alien species characterized for their hive-minded, extremely violent tendencies, and a bloodlust to conquer the entire universe in their entire grasp. Their leader and creator is known as Black Doom, another pretty important character later on. Continuing on, however, the comet wasn't quute strong enough to reach the earths' atmosphere. Atleast, not with the help of the seven Chaos Emeralds, that is. Luckily, their repair to this issue would be made known by Gerald, who contacted Black Doom, who needed more help on the second attempt of Project Shadow. Soon, the two struck a deal--Black Doom gives Gerald a sample of his DNA, in exchange that the next time the comet passes by, Gerald's creation would bring Black Doom the Chaos Emeralds. Without much thought put into it I'd have to assume, the deal was successful--with Gerald now having Black Arms DNA under his possession.
This time around, Gerald gave the creation a more 'desirable phyisique' (descriptor taken straight from the wiki because that sounded funny to me). Which is to say, modeled after a hedgehog. To me, any information on exactly why a hedgehog was picked in universe is unknown, other than it being a more desirable phyisique. (Couldn't be because of speed Because Sonic proves that much is an anomaly only he has. TBD.) Gerald had no outlook on his creation, only viewing it as a means to an end; a weapon, self-operating and no more than something he built. The creation was named 'Shadow', and furthermore, 'Project Shadow' as originally, an expression of Gerald's resentment towards G.U.N., giving him a merely impossible task like it could be done as easily as a hat trick, and breathing down his neck and looming over Gerald's every move with the project. If felt like he was chasing. You won't believe this. Shadows. However, Maria had a much different, blissful outlook on the creation. Commenting that, "A shadow tells you which way to go to find the light." Which, fueled Gerald with the #hopecore beam and realized that this creation could be so much more. Instead of only a weapon capable of destruction on it's whim, it could be a proponent of life, too. A triumph in the scientific field, the medical field, and a true marvel of hope, all in one hybrid. We will be properly referring to Gerald's creation as Shadow now. (OOC: !!!!!!)
Soon, it was time to advance Shadow, and add the Black Arms DNA. Infused with it, it gave Shadow the red markings we know him for today. But not only! The DNA was a good call, as Shadow already reacted much better to Chaos energy as opposed to the Biolizard. And with a generally smaller, less bulky figure, seemed like Shadow would also be pretty fast on his feet. There wasn't only physical advancements, but also mental ones. As Shadow was imparted with a heart and soul akin to Maria's spirits, in the hope that Shadow wouldn't ultimately end up only a weapon--but something more. Don't relax yet. This change would prove later as not permanent as we'll see later. But its cute for now. And even more advancements were made, as Shadow was immortal, he didn't need mechinery on his person to achive that; fully self-operating, unlike the Biolizard. Also, unlike the Prototype, Shadow's intelligence was already a clear improvement. Not only was he intelligent, but he could also think for himself--developing a sense of self without too much derived from either Gerald or Maria. Overall, The second prototype was proving to be much more of a success in every facet, and everything was coming up slightly more hopeful.
This section will be pretty brief unfortunately and I'm mostly spitballing here, but I'd like to talk a little about Shadow's awakening/'birth' and his life on the ARK. Like mentioned above, Shadow was soon offically complete, blowing expections out of the water. Shadow's personality at this time is actually not so differnt from his present one, but I digress. Of course, if it wasn't already made clear, Maria was more excited than ever to see Shadow completed. And the day he was felt like Christmas day when he was, officially let out of his little tube. Immediately, it didn't take long for Maria to grow attached to Shadow (which, yeah who wouldn't look at him). And, likewise, It didn't take Shadow long to grow closer to Maria. Despite how isolated the ARK truly felt, with Maria by his side, Shadow felt things far beyond his purpose. The biggest one being camaraderire between her. Maria treated Shadow like a person, and at points--like family. Even if Gerald tried to view Shadow in the same lens, it was clear that he still didn't share the fondness Maria had for him, the interactions between the Professor and Shadow feeling more like a business exchange. Shadow was trained and often put to tests, to get a calculation of his power written in numbers. It also may seem like Shadow was put in teaching alongside Maria, even if he didn't entirely need all of it like she did. Maria told Shadow about her previous life on Mobius, and all of the wonders it shared. The suns ray across her skin--as opposed to the cold summit The ARK had, the marvels built by humans such as Spagonia, and all of the other little things that made the planet so lively. Shadow listened intently, hoping alongside Maria for a day they both could experience Mobius.
Unfortunately, the ARK would soon befall multiple tragedies--as top secret information was leaked to G.U.N. Mainly, about the Biolizard, who had already took out multiple of their troops. Already, following G.U.N.'s unease about the use and association with Black Arms, they already considered freezing funding for Project Shadow. Of course, Gerald didn't want that, so he tried offering them the Gizoid, an ancient robot superweapon. (Also, nowadays known as Emerl Yea he's here too) G.U.N. declined, wanting their weapon and for the ARK to cease their operations. the organization was not happy learning everything going down from right under their noses, and soon deemed Project Shadow too dangerous. (ooc: mf you????????? Asked for a weapon??????? I know it's a cover up but its still infuriating to think about) They came over to the ARK, in a cover up 'examination'. One that was actually a shutdown, now known as the "ARK Shutdown Operation". Now would you believe me if I told you that the goverment lied. Because. They very much did. Acting as if they were coming in peace, they actually came armed. Evacuating civillians and killing scientists. Basically, average military behavior God I hate it here. Everything was meant to be destroyed, with the only execption of Gerald, and Shadow. Who the former was to be detained and work on the latter. During the attack, Gerald tried to finish Shadow and get the both of him and Maria to evacuation. However, things go grim quickly as Maria is shot before she can even reach the pod. Shadow, (fortunately or unfortunately however you want to spin it) did make it. And all he can do is watch in great anguish as Maria uses the last of her dwindiling strength to press the eject button, making a promise that no matter what, he protects the planet for her. And just like that, Shadow is sent to Mobius. Not with Maria, but certainly with animosity towards the ones who killed her.
Shadow was put into stasis on Prison island, and Gerald was forced to continue work on Shadow. Now, with everything lost, and his granddaughter murdered, this drove the scientist to madness, something that originally terrified him. But, the downward spiral continued, until he's left an empty husk of what was. his behavior at this point more manic than anything else. His only goal was to avenge Maria and have humanity destroyed for taking her. He didn't only brainwash Shadow into thinking similarly, he also got a hold of Emerl, making his goal also to kill humanity as we know. Back to Shadow, he altered Shadow's memory of Maria's wish so that Shadow could, falsely, follow along to it and dring destruction and reckoning to humans. Gerald left one last note in his diary, hoping that someone awakes Shadow if they also hope for the end of the world. Soon, G.U.N. finds out about Gerald's destructive behavior, and has him executed. Before he was, Gerald did one last thing, leaving behind a recording where he condemned the world for the true evil its capable of; for taking away an innocent girl with little to no involvement in Shadow's creation. He gives an estimate for how long it would take the ARK to colide with the earth, and after recording is properly--executed.
Thus, marks the 'true' backstory of Shadow the Hedgehog...
IS WHAT I WOULD SAY WELCOME TO SONIC ADVENTURE TWO !!!!!!!!!! OH YEAH

Welcome to 50 years later. In the current as we know. So. Remember the diary from earlier? And the note Gerald left? You won't believe who found it. (Eggman) Yeah his grandson found the note, and of course, the end of the world is a tantalizing idea to Eggman. So, he pursuits Prison Island, in hope to find the elusive Shadow, capable of destroying the world. Kept away in the highest secured prison was an unconscious Shadow the Hedgehog. He releases Shadow with no thought, who offers servitude to the Doctor. Which, of course Eggman readily accepts and commands Shadow to bring all seven Chaos Emeralds, and meet him at the ARK.
Now, I don't want to focus too much on anyone besides Shadow but also I kinda have to for the explanation so bare with me here. Anyway, Sonic is accused by G.U.N. of being the one to go off the prison island and release Shadow. Safe to say, Sonic had absolutely no part in that happening, and doesn't even know who the Hell Shadow is. (ooc: .........yet) He utilizes his speed to flee prosecution, all while Shadow is off to find the Chaos Emeralds. For the very first time, Sonic and Shadow meet up, both caught up doing different things. Sonic tries attacking, but Shadow warps away with a Chaos Emerald. And Sonic gets captured by G.U.N. shortly after.
Like planned, Eggman and Shadow meet on the ARK, the latter of which informing Eggman about the Eclipse Cannon. Which. Say it with me guys. Is a mass destructive, deadly beam strong enough to pierce through and engulf any celestial body in the desired direction; if all seven chaos emeralds are in it's possession, that is. And, Eggman wishes to use this cannon to make the world submit to his will. And Rouge, who was previously eavesdropping thanks to a hidden base, drops in to aid their cause, forming the Prototype, 'Team Dark'.
Sonic was soon put within Gerald's old cell deep within Prison Island. Fortunately, Sonic has great friends (Tails and Amy) who pursued him and rescued him out of the cell. While, the aforementioned Team Dark go back to Prison Island to get the three Chaos Emeralds located there, and blow the Island up. Sonic meets up with Shadow again, but before their interaction can majorly take a turn, the Island is about to guess what. Explode. Luckily, everyone makes it out safe and sound, and we proceed.
With six Emeralds in their posession, Eggman hijacks and broadcasts it's power on live TV, destroying a part of the moon with it, threatening that the same thing will soon happen to Earth if they don't surrender to his rule. Of course, this sparks frenzy, and as they knew, the end of the world. As Sonic and Tails still escape G.U.N.'s prosecution, they infiltrate the presidents limousine and hack it's computer--Showing that Eggman's location was on the ARK. and, with the help of Knuckles and that very hidden base from earlier, the heroes all board a rocket to the ARK.
While Knuckles is off retriving the Master Emeralds shards (it broke earlier via him and Rouge), Sonic and Tails goes off to sabotage Eggman and give him a fake Chaos Emerald. Which, would shut down the Eclipse Cannon. Uh oh. Eggman caught on. Kidnapping Amy and forcing Tails' hand to reveal his plans. All while, Eggman ejects Sonic in the very bad not good Exploding pod. Luckily, Sonic recreates Shadow's Chaos Control using the fake Emerald, and he didn't die Oh yeah. For the third time Sonic confronts Shadow, and this time--defeats him, disabling the Eclipse Cannon as well. The joy is shortlived, however, as when Eggman stealthily inserts the last Emerald, it doesn't fire the eclipse cannon, but instead activates Gerald's doomsday plan. The one that hurls the ARK towards earth Yea what about it. A plan was quickly hatched to use the Master Emerald and neutralize the energy of the Chaos Emeralds before things get ugly. Everyone rushes to the Cannon's core, minus Amy and Shadow. Amy tries to plea to Shadow, about how not everyone deserves to die. Which makes Shadow remember the late Maria's promise to him. So, with that, Shadow reforms and helps them all out and Not destroy the earth.
the Cannon's core is apparently, a host of the Biolizard, who Shadow defeats, for now. Knuckles tries to neutralize the Chaos Emeralds effect, but it only seems to fuel both the biolizard and the ARK, the former now turning into the Finalizard. In one last effort, Sonic and Shadow use the Chaos Emeralds to both turn into their super forms, defeating the Finalizard and using Chaos Control to warp the ARK back to its original location in orbit. This plan works, but not without casualty. Shadow, who could no longer sustain himself, plummets to earth, presumed dead. Everyone celebrates, And Sonic wishes Shadow a farewell, concluding in a visually and storily Compelling end to Shadow...

THE FINAL STRETCH (sonic heroes and shadow the hedgehog brief recap)
Did you know? Shadow was orginally planned to be a one off character. however, due to his positive reception, SEGA made him a reoccuring character. thjs is pretty well known so you might know.
Alright let's go. One paragraph this time. After the events of Sonic Adventure 2, (I believe) Eggman took the amnesiac Shadow and put him in a little pod. Soon, Rouge mistakes the secret base as a secret vault, and breaks in for that very reason. Finding Shadow there (who was presumed dead), she is quick to awaken him. Not only did she find Shadow, but also E-123 Omega, supposed to be the strongest of the E-100 robot series, Omega is beyond offended that Eggman locked him up with Shadow. And after a near fight broke out between Shadow and Omega, Rouge breaks it up. And thus, the 'Team Dark' we all know is born. Shadow, still with amnesia, can't remember his past. And, very unfortunately, is also lined up with the Black Comets return. Which, if you don't remember--arrives every 50 years, and is filled with Black Arms. An alien species characterized for their hive-minded, extremely violent tendencies, and a bloodlust to conquer the entire universe in their grasp. Black Doom sees Shadow again, and tells him to retrieve all of the Chaos Emeralds in return for his memory. Shadow obliges. Little did he know that they were going to be used to activate the Eclipse Cannon, and attempt to destroy the earth but Shadow's friends help him get his memories back and he instead fires the beam onto the Black Comet, destroying the Black arms as we know and making Shadow the only living hybrid left.
I don't know where to put this but he briefly meets Emerl again in Sonic battle. After miscellaneous story beats, Shadow is wound up on Emerald beach with both Emerl and Sonic. Sonic tries to talk to the two of them and argues that they have hearts, and would never use it for evil. Emerl wants Shadow's Chaos Emerald for power. Sonic forces (ha ha) Emerl to accompany Shadow as they uncover both his true identity and Eggman's plans. Shadow and Emerl briefly bond, as Shadow mulls over Sonic's words about their souls and "hearts". Rouge soon drops by and confides to Shadow that Gerald gave both of them souls to ensure peace, even if originally weapons. Shadow reluctantly, ends up agreeing, giving the Emerald to Emerl after all, commanding the Gizoid to "bring hope to humanity". It works, and Emerl is free from the shackes of Eggman's overriden programming. By the end of it, Shadow, Emerl, and Sonic all Sonic battle eacchother, if you will (i won't). It ends with Emerl feeling joy and Shadow leaving, still believing that weapons shouldn't have feelings. However, it's clear Sonic's words still struck a cord in him regardless. And I think that's cute. Sue me. I added something here I think is cute ok I'm not (maybe) making a sonadow shrine so im microdosing on sonadow here SUE ME.

Although, not without limitations and handicaps; as Gerald was soon pressured by G.U.N. to make the ARK a weapon for destruction, since, birthing the Eclipse Cannon. The aforementioned cannon is a mass destructive, deadly beam strong enough to pierce through and engulf any celestial body in the desired direction; if all seven chaos emeralds are in it's possession, that is.
Another person very, very important to Shadow is Maria Robotnik. I'd bet that even non-fans might recognize her name if anything else. She was a young (I presume) teenaged girl, and the granddaughter to Gerald. One of the main catalysts at play here was her terminal illness, a severe neuron deficiency in her body. Which, could be severe enough to paralyze her for days, if not weeks at a time. Despite her weak body, the same could not be said about her spirit. In all other ways, Maria was strong. She was kind, and a true optimist, seeing the positives in everything, including her illness. She was generous, always putting others before herself, even when not needed. A purely good soul in a world that ultimately, didn't deserve it. Soon, Gerald took her under his care at the Space Colony ARK, to both act as a remission and, to find a cure for her terminal illness in the form of a recent contract between Gerald and G.U.N. now dubbed, 'Project Shadow'.
Project Shadow was a top secret deal from G.U.N. to create the Ultimate Lifeform; A weapon only at first, and second, a cure for illness, in the form of Immortality. As stated earlier, Gerald took up the offer, wanting more than anything to find Maria a cure to her illness. Already, the project got off to a rocky start, as the two had different plans of what they wanted. Of course, G.U.N. wanted a weapon, another metaphorical trophy to mount next to the walls of their tools capable of mass destruction. And Gerald wanted nothing more than something to cure his sick granddaughter. Even if only proof that it was capable was enough to sought after. Two conflicting ideas, bound to clash together at some point. Gerald's first idea was to harness a power called 'Chaos Emerald energy', which came from. You'll never guess. Chaos Emeralds. Which, curiosity was materialized into a creature known as the Biolizard, modeled after a salamander. The biolizard is metacontexually and in universe generally also known for and is referred to as Shadow's prototype. Unfortunately, The biolizard turned out to be uncontrollable, and too dangerous and unpredictable. The creature is very much cited to 'be in pain', which, just shows how even now, Shadow still needs aid in controling the powers as well. (Food for thought!) And even if some knowledge was learned through the Biolizard, such as self-regeneration and restoration, it ultimately had to be scrapped in favor of something with a mind of its own, less mechanical help--and slightly less unpredictable.
Now, around this time over 50 years ago, it seemed like Gerald picked a good time to do a rehaul on Project Shadow. As, around this time, the elusive Black Comet passed by the earth. The Black Comet arrives every 50 years, and is filled with Black Arms. An alien species characterized for their hive-minded, extremely violent tendencies, and a bloodlust to conquer the entire universe in their entire grasp. Their leader and creator is known as Black Doom, another pretty important character later on. Continuing on, however, the comet wasn't quute strong enough to reach the earths' atmosphere. Atleast, not with the help of the seven Chaos Emeralds, that is. Luckily, their repair to this issue would be made known by Gerald, who contacted Black Doom, who needed more help on the second attempt of Project Shadow. Soon, the two struck a deal--Black Doom gives Gerald a sample of his DNA, in exchange that the next time the comet passes by, Gerald's creation would bring Black Doom the Chaos Emeralds. Without much thought put into it I'd have to assume, the deal was successful--with Gerald now having Black Arms DNA under his possession.
This time around, Gerald gave the creation a more 'desirable phyisique' (descriptor taken straight from the wiki because that sounded funny to me). Which is to say, modeled after a hedgehog. To me, any information on exactly why a hedgehog was picked in universe is unknown, other than it being a more desirable phyisique. (Couldn't be because of speed Because Sonic proves that much is an anomaly only he has. TBD.) Gerald had no outlook on his creation, only viewing it as a means to an end; a weapon, self-operating and no more than something he built. The creation was named 'Shadow', and furthermore, 'Project Shadow' as originally, an expression of Gerald's resentment towards G.U.N., giving him a merely impossible task like it could be done as easily as a hat trick, and breathing down his neck and looming over Gerald's every move with the project. If felt like he was chasing. You won't believe this. Shadows. However, Maria had a much different, blissful outlook on the creation. Commenting that, "A shadow tells you which way to go to find the light." Which, fueled Gerald with the #hopecore beam and realized that this creation could be so much more. Instead of only a weapon capable of destruction on it's whim, it could be a proponent of life, too. A triumph in the scientific field, the medical field, and a true marvel of hope, all in one hybrid. We will be properly referring to Gerald's creation as Shadow now. (OOC: !!!!!!)
Soon, it was time to advance Shadow, and add the Black Arms DNA. Infused with it, it gave Shadow the red markings we know him for today. But not only! The DNA was a good call, as Shadow already reacted much better to Chaos energy as opposed to the Biolizard. And with a generally smaller, less bulky figure, seemed like Shadow would also be pretty fast on his feet. There wasn't only physical advancements, but also mental ones. As Shadow was imparted with a heart and soul akin to Maria's spirits, in the hope that Shadow wouldn't ultimately end up only a weapon--but something more. Don't relax yet. This change would prove later as not permanent as we'll see later. But its cute for now. And even more advancements were made, as Shadow was immortal, he didn't need mechinery on his person to achive that; fully self-operating, unlike the Biolizard. Also, unlike the Prototype, Shadow's intelligence was already a clear improvement. Not only was he intelligent, but he could also think for himself--developing a sense of self without too much derived from either Gerald or Maria. Overall, The second prototype was proving to be much more of a success in every facet, and everything was coming up slightly more hopeful.
This section will be pretty brief unfortunately and I'm mostly spitballing here, but I'd like to talk a little about Shadow's awakening/'birth' and his life on the ARK. Like mentioned above, Shadow was soon offically complete, blowing expections out of the water. Shadow's personality at this time is actually not so differnt from his present one, but I digress. Of course, if it wasn't already made clear, Maria was more excited than ever to see Shadow completed. And the day he was felt like Christmas day when he was, officially let out of his little tube. Immediately, it didn't take long for Maria to grow attached to Shadow (which, yeah who wouldn't look at him). And, likewise, It didn't take Shadow long to grow closer to Maria. Despite how isolated the ARK truly felt, with Maria by his side, Shadow felt things far beyond his purpose. The biggest one being camaraderire between her. Maria treated Shadow like a person, and at points--like family. Even if Gerald tried to view Shadow in the same lens, it was clear that he still didn't share the fondness Maria had for him, the interactions between the Professor and Shadow feeling more like a business exchange. Shadow was trained and often put to tests, to get a calculation of his power written in numbers. It also may seem like Shadow was put in teaching alongside Maria, even if he didn't entirely need all of it like she did. Maria told Shadow about her previous life on Mobius, and all of the wonders it shared. The suns ray across her skin--as opposed to the cold summit The ARK had, the marvels built by humans such as Spagonia, and all of the other little things that made the planet so lively. Shadow listened intently, hoping alongside Maria for a day they both could experience Mobius.
Unfortunately, the ARK would soon befall multiple tragedies--as top secret information was leaked to G.U.N. Mainly, about the Biolizard, who had already took out multiple of their troops. Already, following G.U.N.'s unease about the use and association with Black Arms, they already considered freezing funding for Project Shadow. Of course, Gerald didn't want that, so he tried offering them the Gizoid, an ancient robot superweapon. (Also, nowadays known as Emerl Yea he's here too) G.U.N. declined, wanting their weapon and for the ARK to cease their operations. the organization was not happy learning everything going down from right under their noses, and soon deemed Project Shadow too dangerous. (ooc: mf you????????? Asked for a weapon??????? I know it's a cover up but its still infuriating to think about) They came over to the ARK, in a cover up 'examination'. One that was actually a shutdown, now known as the "ARK Shutdown Operation". Now would you believe me if I told you that the goverment lied. Because. They very much did. Acting as if they were coming in peace, they actually came armed. Evacuating civillians and killing scientists. Basically, average military behavior God I hate it here. Everything was meant to be destroyed, with the only execption of Gerald, and Shadow. Who the former was to be detained and work on the latter. During the attack, Gerald tried to finish Shadow and get the both of him and Maria to evacuation. However, things go grim quickly as Maria is shot before she can even reach the pod. Shadow, (fortunately or unfortunately however you want to spin it) did make it. And all he can do is watch in great anguish as Maria uses the last of her dwindiling strength to press the eject button, making a promise that no matter what, he protects the planet for her. And just like that, Shadow is sent to Mobius. Not with Maria, but certainly with animosity towards the ones who killed her.
Shadow was put into stasis on Prison island, and Gerald was forced to continue work on Shadow. Now, with everything lost, and his granddaughter murdered, this drove the scientist to madness, something that originally terrified him. But, the downward spiral continued, until he's left an empty husk of what was. his behavior at this point more manic than anything else. His only goal was to avenge Maria and have humanity destroyed for taking her. He didn't only brainwash Shadow into thinking similarly, he also got a hold of Emerl, making his goal also to kill humanity as we know. Back to Shadow, he altered Shadow's memory of Maria's wish so that Shadow could, falsely, follow along to it and dring destruction and reckoning to humans. Gerald left one last note in his diary, hoping that someone awakes Shadow if they also hope for the end of the world. Soon, G.U.N. finds out about Gerald's destructive behavior, and has him executed. Before he was, Gerald did one last thing, leaving behind a recording where he condemned the world for the true evil its capable of; for taking away an innocent girl with little to no involvement in Shadow's creation. He gives an estimate for how long it would take the ARK to colide with the earth, and after recording is properly--executed.
Thus, marks the 'true' backstory of Shadow the Hedgehog...

Welcome to 50 years later. In the current as we know. So. Remember the diary from earlier? And the note Gerald left? You won't believe who found it. (Eggman) Yeah his grandson found the note, and of course, the end of the world is a tantalizing idea to Eggman. So, he pursuits Prison Island, in hope to find the elusive Shadow, capable of destroying the world. Kept away in the highest secured prison was an unconscious Shadow the Hedgehog. He releases Shadow with no thought, who offers servitude to the Doctor. Which, of course Eggman readily accepts and commands Shadow to bring all seven Chaos Emeralds, and meet him at the ARK.
Now, I don't want to focus too much on anyone besides Shadow but also I kinda have to for the explanation so bare with me here. Anyway, Sonic is accused by G.U.N. of being the one to go off the prison island and release Shadow. Safe to say, Sonic had absolutely no part in that happening, and doesn't even know who the Hell Shadow is. (ooc: .........yet) He utilizes his speed to flee prosecution, all while Shadow is off to find the Chaos Emeralds. For the very first time, Sonic and Shadow meet up, both caught up doing different things. Sonic tries attacking, but Shadow warps away with a Chaos Emerald. And Sonic gets captured by G.U.N. shortly after.
Like planned, Eggman and Shadow meet on the ARK, the latter of which informing Eggman about the Eclipse Cannon. Which. Say it with me guys. Is a mass destructive, deadly beam strong enough to pierce through and engulf any celestial body in the desired direction; if all seven chaos emeralds are in it's possession, that is. And, Eggman wishes to use this cannon to make the world submit to his will. And Rouge, who was previously eavesdropping thanks to a hidden base, drops in to aid their cause, forming the Prototype, 'Team Dark'.
Sonic was soon put within Gerald's old cell deep within Prison Island. Fortunately, Sonic has great friends (Tails and Amy) who pursued him and rescued him out of the cell. While, the aforementioned Team Dark go back to Prison Island to get the three Chaos Emeralds located there, and blow the Island up. Sonic meets up with Shadow again, but before their interaction can majorly take a turn, the Island is about to guess what. Explode. Luckily, everyone makes it out safe and sound, and we proceed.
With six Emeralds in their posession, Eggman hijacks and broadcasts it's power on live TV, destroying a part of the moon with it, threatening that the same thing will soon happen to Earth if they don't surrender to his rule. Of course, this sparks frenzy, and as they knew, the end of the world. As Sonic and Tails still escape G.U.N.'s prosecution, they infiltrate the presidents limousine and hack it's computer--Showing that Eggman's location was on the ARK. and, with the help of Knuckles and that very hidden base from earlier, the heroes all board a rocket to the ARK.
While Knuckles is off retriving the Master Emeralds shards (it broke earlier via him and Rouge), Sonic and Tails goes off to sabotage Eggman and give him a fake Chaos Emerald. Which, would shut down the Eclipse Cannon. Uh oh. Eggman caught on. Kidnapping Amy and forcing Tails' hand to reveal his plans. All while, Eggman ejects Sonic in the very bad not good Exploding pod. Luckily, Sonic recreates Shadow's Chaos Control using the fake Emerald, and he didn't die Oh yeah. For the third time Sonic confronts Shadow, and this time--defeats him, disabling the Eclipse Cannon as well. The joy is shortlived, however, as when Eggman stealthily inserts the last Emerald, it doesn't fire the eclipse cannon, but instead activates Gerald's doomsday plan. The one that hurls the ARK towards earth Yea what about it. A plan was quickly hatched to use the Master Emerald and neutralize the energy of the Chaos Emeralds before things get ugly. Everyone rushes to the Cannon's core, minus Amy and Shadow. Amy tries to plea to Shadow, about how not everyone deserves to die. Which makes Shadow remember the late Maria's promise to him. So, with that, Shadow reforms and helps them all out and Not destroy the earth.
the Cannon's core is apparently, a host of the Biolizard, who Shadow defeats, for now. Knuckles tries to neutralize the Chaos Emeralds effect, but it only seems to fuel both the biolizard and the ARK, the former now turning into the Finalizard. In one last effort, Sonic and Shadow use the Chaos Emeralds to both turn into their super forms, defeating the Finalizard and using Chaos Control to warp the ARK back to its original location in orbit. This plan works, but not without casualty. Shadow, who could no longer sustain himself, plummets to earth, presumed dead. Everyone celebrates, And Sonic wishes Shadow a farewell, concluding in a visually and storily Compelling end to Shadow...

THE FINAL STRETCH (sonic heroes and shadow the hedgehog brief recap)
Did you know? Shadow was orginally planned to be a one off character. however, due to his positive reception, SEGA made him a reoccuring character. thjs is pretty well known so you might know.
Alright let's go. One paragraph this time. After the events of Sonic Adventure 2, (I believe) Eggman took the amnesiac Shadow and put him in a little pod. Soon, Rouge mistakes the secret base as a secret vault, and breaks in for that very reason. Finding Shadow there (who was presumed dead), she is quick to awaken him. Not only did she find Shadow, but also E-123 Omega, supposed to be the strongest of the E-100 robot series, Omega is beyond offended that Eggman locked him up with Shadow. And after a near fight broke out between Shadow and Omega, Rouge breaks it up. And thus, the 'Team Dark' we all know is born. Shadow, still with amnesia, can't remember his past. And, very unfortunately, is also lined up with the Black Comets return. Which, if you don't remember--arrives every 50 years, and is filled with Black Arms. An alien species characterized for their hive-minded, extremely violent tendencies, and a bloodlust to conquer the entire universe in their grasp. Black Doom sees Shadow again, and tells him to retrieve all of the Chaos Emeralds in return for his memory. Shadow obliges. Little did he know that they were going to be used to activate the Eclipse Cannon, and attempt to destroy the earth but Shadow's friends help him get his memories back and he instead fires the beam onto the Black Comet, destroying the Black arms as we know and making Shadow the only living hybrid left.
I don't know where to put this but he briefly meets Emerl again in Sonic battle. After miscellaneous story beats, Shadow is wound up on Emerald beach with both Emerl and Sonic. Sonic tries to talk to the two of them and argues that they have hearts, and would never use it for evil. Emerl wants Shadow's Chaos Emerald for power. Sonic forces (ha ha) Emerl to accompany Shadow as they uncover both his true identity and Eggman's plans. Shadow and Emerl briefly bond, as Shadow mulls over Sonic's words about their souls and "hearts". Rouge soon drops by and confides to Shadow that Gerald gave both of them souls to ensure peace, even if originally weapons. Shadow reluctantly, ends up agreeing, giving the Emerald to Emerl after all, commanding the Gizoid to "bring hope to humanity". It works, and Emerl is free from the shackes of Eggman's overriden programming. By the end of it, Shadow, Emerl, and Sonic all Sonic battle eacchother, if you will (i won't). It ends with Emerl feeling joy and Shadow leaving, still believing that weapons shouldn't have feelings. However, it's clear Sonic's words still struck a cord in him regardless. And I think that's cute. Sue me. I added something here I think is cute ok I'm not (maybe) making a sonadow shrine so im microdosing on sonadow here SUE ME.

this is where Papa gets unhinged. now i know everyone and their MAMA loves Shadow but seriously. he means so much to me. genuinely he helps me through life yes it sounds dumb and cringe. its gonna get worse buddy don't read ahead if youre already cringed out you won't like it.
I wish i could say that i loved Shadow my whole life but honestly I didn't. I know fake fan kill me 💔 to be honest it was quite the opposite? I didn't didn't HATE Shadow but, i do not even remember like. knowing he existed as a kid (and i was a sonic fan briefly and STILL?) it was around 2023 where there was proof i knew of his existence (aka a very shitty edit i made. im not showing it) but tbh in 2023 I wasn't focused on Shadow, or just Sonic. it was something else that was. much cringier💔 but that's besides the point. in around 2025, i finally gaf about Sonic and subsequently, Shadow.
I have this thing where i have a giant year long hyperfixation that soon dies, and another takes its place for a year, rinse and repeat. i cant say the fate might be much different with Sonic, but i know that Shadow has made it much more different. in my life, i got "crushes" on characters sure, but with Shadow? it's been more intense than the others. no i dont want to like fuck a hedgehog im not a freak like that. with me being aegoromantic, I process 'love' differently. it's hard to explain how i intricately feel about Shadow, it's not love per se, but its the closest to it maybe! am I saying i would date Shadow? again, no. i really cant explain what i really do feel about him, but it's the closest to love ill probably get. i just wanna give him headpats and say that everything will be okay in the end💔 he needs to hear that.
okay WOAH I went off track woops lol. anyway, i really dont rember the specific date when i really started liking Shadow, but as far as i know, February 4th 2025 is the date that echos in my head, as the first time I ever drew Shadow (it looked like ass). Ever since, i loved him. Around then, i watched a Shadow Generations stream with my sister and NO JOKE I LITERALLY STATED CRYING AT THE FIRST SEGMENT WHICH WAS DARK BEGINNINGS. HE SO CUTE ohhhh my lord. i crode so hard💔 still to this day i tear up at that. that and the end of Shadow Generations OHHHH MY BABY☹️ not to sound like crying makes me the superior Shadow fan but MAN. this guy makes me SAD. to be honest ive always liked characters who obviously need comfort. maybe that's a projection thing but i cant help it. and Shadow is like the number one guy who needs it💔 so it's obvious why id gravitate towards him. also, hes almost exactly my type (in like a platonic way though). i myself am emo / goth (before anyone gets on my (ASS yes i know they are different subcultures. i am both) and Shadow is THE N1 EMO. DONT EVEN JOKE LAD. MY IRL FRIEND CALLED HIM AN EBOY AND I TWEAKED SO HARD MAN. SHADOW WAS AROUND WAYYYY BEFORE E BOYS. THIS GUYS AN EMO FOUNDING FATHER. sorry sorry i just get worked up about that. also, out of all the Sonic characters, i just find his backstory so raw. i dont know. theres probably Sonic characters with worse ones sure but DAMN IS IT HEARTBREAKING. maybe because its just so. Real? i dont know. I think sega (especially recently) has done a great job representing grief in Shadow's story. although, i do think they should like actually give him a new arc. listen i love Shadow's backstory but it's been like 20 years and were still on abt it /LH . Shadow Generations really gives an opportunity for Shadow to turn a new leaf. im not saying he should completely move on, but I think its the next step for him naturally. to show that the pain never leaves, but to accept and grow around it? i dont know how to word it. Anyway yeah, Shadow's story is relatable to a lot of people im sure. personally, theres not really been anyone in my life ive grieved over that bad. but Shadow's story does such a good job at really making you sympathize with him and understand his pain, why he makes the decisions he does. just why he is the way he is. i really hope we see Shadow become more happier in upcoming games :-) Im not saying he should be like Balls on the wall happy but just out of this weird indifference state. ( btw i don't mean his personality he's perfect the way he is I mean like . his view on life in general tbh ? idk anymore man . ) but thats all my opinion anyway

Shadow is just so so pretty. like genuinely. goodness HES SO 😍 Gerald cooked so fucking hard. also SEGA cooked so hard with his design r u kidding. being an artist myself, I've dabbled in character design for sure , but not enough to determine if like. Shadow has a good character design (but i think he does!) all i know is that if u don't know shit about STH Shadow would absolutely FAIL the silhouette test. but hey. im looking at this from a purely gay standpoint. anyway he is so gorgeous. and im sure people think im insane for saying it and I get That. i dont know how but there are legitimately some scene where he looks ETHEREAL. my big example is that one shot in the opening of SHTH (2005) where he's on the roof with his gun. you know the one. he looks SO GOOD THERE RARAFARAFARAGA? and that is not just a sparce example. BUT back to the IDW comics. EVERY ARTIST DRAWS HIM SO WELL IT MAKES ME SCREAM. especially. ESPECIALLY WHICHEVER ARTIST DREW HIM IN THE CHAO RACE (that's what im calling it) ISSUES. I feel like some people mischaracterize Shadow so fucking bad . i roll my eyes when he's depicted as a heartless evil bad guy, when that is just not the case at all. Shadow is someone who is ultimately—dealing with grief and trauma. the moment a kids franchise character is morally grey i guess all contexture dies💔 no but seriously, I feel like most of Shadow's personality, actions and train of logic can be explained by the stem of his trauma. I'm not defending the ending where he literally kills the population or anything like that, but that also can be explained by... you know. Shadow was at the start of SHTH, quite vulnerable. not remembering his past, or who he really is. Black Doom took advantage of that fact, and practically manipulated Shadow into being his lackey and doing his dirty work. is that his fault? yeah partially. but is that ending even canon? obviously not. anyway im getting sidetracked. i mean i also love edgy Shadow. with his guns AND MOTORCYCLE but at the same time... I feel like people saw that and really just chalked Shadow up to that. but he is so much more than that. he has so much interesting moments and character outside of his edginess. me personally, I much more want to see Shadow's rare tender side. The things that the IDW comics (as it stands in 2025, when I'm writing this. i am aware of the issue coming out just with Shadow and trust me im excited), That fuck ass Sonic Boom episode, and even Sonic 3 tends to not show. I get it's to really make those moments extra special when we do see Shadow be thoughtful, and i get that most thie things I listed above have usually, not the time to explore all of Shadow's lore. and im not asking for that. but what I personally wanna see is more moments like in TMOSTH, when Shadow is caught purchasing concert tickets for Amy. it's a miniscule part in the game, but it really shows that Shadow cares about the people around him to a degree. Him and Sonic don't hate eachother like at all, it's just their conflicting worldviews and personalites that make them butt heads. The whole thing at the end of SxSG when Shadow says he's letting go of all thst excessive anger--means something to me. Shadow is a character who is just trying to find himself and let go—not of his past, but the anger at the world because of it. that makes Shadow so interesting. and seeing him get bogged down to appeal to flanderization hurts me so much. anyway if this paragraph is better written than the rest it's because I wrote it a month after all the other ones.
Here I come defending Shadow some more. but I've seen some people give Shadow flack for hating humanity, but at the same time, how is he not supposed to? i mean, i understand hate might be an overstatement maybe, but first, people cope differently. So Shadow might not be ready to accept humanity yet. second, I mean he's not wrong? Think of all the atrocities that people commit onto other people for even a second, and I think it's pretty fair as to why he thinks that. Now im not saying I'm a cynic by any means, but i understand it. Now, i am an optimist and try to personally make the best of everything on earth, but I understand Shadow's frustration—especially to the government. I'm not saying the conglomerate of SEGA is 'based' for having a story that slightly agrees with what i think, but Shadow's story definitely has undertones (maybe even overtones) about the recklessness of their government, especially G.U.N. We see in Gerald's journal how much G.U.N was pressuring the old man to make him a weapon. And when they realize Shadow might be dangerous or something (I'm blanking on details right now), their recklessness ends up with the death of an innocent girl who didn't (directly) have any involvement with shadows creation. And that does mirror a lot of sad, situations in real life of how our armies can be reckless and not take their roles as seriously as they are. but I'm not going to sit here and talk about all the political similaritites with SHTH and irl. but that's all to say, thats another reason why i love Shadow so much. he's such an interesting character and i really love his backstory ♡♡♡♡ aww I love you Shadow ♡♡♡♡♡
